chive portraits

Well, the appearance of the first chive blossom is an excuse to test ones macro lenses, innit.
7d & Canon 100mm, f2.8 brings me very close, 5d II & same lens: I like the quality and lastly 7d & Sigma 20mm (yes, this is a wide angle macro). That lens needs very little distance, I was about 1 inch away from the flower. And yes, it's ortonized (I can't help it at the moment).

finally: blossoms

There have to be some blossom photos each year...
And normally I'm not into post production, but at the moment that seems to have changed. Here is a bit of the Hawthorn hedge (or so I think - correct me if I'm wrong), ortonized:

When I stood in the river last week, with rainwater literally streaming into my waders from above (yes, I had to get out of the water, out of the waders, take off my soaked trousers, hang them into a tree and get into my second pair of (dry) waders just in my knickers, brrrr) I thought it would be cold and grim from now on. This week - now that the fieldwork is over and I have to stand in the lab - the sun has come out for two days of Indian Summer. And all of a sudden the rocket has decided to blossom, after 1.5 years of hesitation. The hover flies love it:

a little late

I saw this chap in the woods - all its colleagues were long done with flowering and seeding. But what can I say, I'm always late, too.

This cute little flower was blossoming next to a road. The name is on the tip of my tongue...I bet I'll remember later this afternoon when I'm nowhere near the computer.

I spotted this blossom next to a ripening apple. What might have prompted the tree to produce a late flower? The hover fly is clearly pleased, though.

I found these pretty Lilies in an overgrown meadow in College - a few days later the lawn was cut, and so were they :(

Calla friends

I'm on holiday still, so I won't be able to return any visits until later in the week...but I couldn't resist scheduling a post with these two flower friends. I liked how the one is so considerately dripping it's dew drops into the other.

Pentaglottis sempervirens

Another ubiquitous little plant that I like. Often referred to as 'that weed over there' most people seem to have forgotten that its common name is 'Green Alkanet'. The little blue flowers are a huge success with the bumble bees, and can apparently be used to garnish salads and drinks...

Towards midsummer the plants grow too high for their own good:



The one above has collapsed under the heavy weight of some summery rain drops.

Ever since I stopped needing to use grasses as makeshift strings for little twigs (and the like) at the age of - say - eleven or twelve, this ubiquitous plant didn't really get much time from me. Until I suddenly started to develop hayfever some years ago. Do grasses just give us allergies to attract attention?

There is probably no spot in the UK which is further from the sea than where I live. Summer life happens very much in the garden. I love watching my insect neighbours, such as this assiduous looking bumble bee:
